Refresher – S123 / G189 – Site Supervisor

WorkSafe Connect’s 1-day refresher course is a trainer-led program that is delivered either face-to-face or online (via Zoom in an electronic classroom).
This course is for those who need to refresh their previous S123 / G189 accreditation in a trainer-supported environment (as opposed to a self-paced online course with extensive evidence requirements and limited-to-no trainer interaction).
The 1-day program is interactive and activity-based – it refreshes practical knowledge and skills relating to risk management, effective communication and incident investigations.
To be eligible to attend, students must complete “Refresher Application Form” (details below) and provide the following evidence prior to course commencement:
All assessments & activities are completed in the course – there is no post course evidence, or outside-of-classroom study required.
Under Queensland Legislation, Site Supervisors and Site Safety Health Representatives (SSHR) are statutory positions. The Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee has deemed it a requirement to hold 3 units of competency (S123 / G189) for these roles. Under the Queensland Coal Mining Regulations, these competencies must be refreshed every 5 years.
Students who meet the eligibility requirements and successfully complete the 1-day program will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following national units of competency:

The legislative context of the course is both the Coal Mining and Mining & Quarrying Legislation (for hard rock / metalliferous mines & quarries).

Students must be able to provide their previous accreditation and evidence their participation in risk assessments and shift reports.
It’s also designed to be interactive, practical and activity based – ensuring students refresh their practical knowledge and skills relating to risk management, effective communication and incident investigations.
Training will be conducted by one of our experienced trainer assessors who have resource industry currency, strong knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and industry standards.
There are practical activities throughout the 1-day program that ensures the course is engaging, interesting and relevant.

If you do not have the required evidence, you should attend the 2-day S123 / G189 program (noting that you’ll also receive a bonus G2 accreditation for no additional cost) – click here for course details.
You are welcome to book and pay for the course via our website and then submit the form & evidence in the following day / days. If it is determined you are not eligible for the 1-day refresher program (based on the evidence provided), you will be offered the 2-day course and a gap fee will be payable. Alternatively, you may also request a refund prior to course commencement.

Please wear comfortable clothing (i.e., long pants, shorts, t-shirt) and closed-in shoes. There is no requirement to wear PPE / high-vis.
All course resources will be supplied.
For public courses in Brisbane and Townville, there is parking available at or nearby the training facility. Tea, coffee, biscuits & mints are supplied and there is a fridge and microwave available. Alternatively, there are nearby food options available which can be accessed during breaks.
S123 is a mandated requirement for Site Supervisors and Site Safety Health Representatives (SSHR) in Queensland's Resources Industry.
The course consists of 3 nationally accredited competencies that the Safety and Health Advisory Committees for Queensland's resource sector have identified that these statutory roles need to hold.
The competencies included are as follows:
The Site Senior Executive (SSE) cannot appoint a person to either of these roles without the person holding these competencies.
The Safety and Health Advisory Committees for Queensland's resource sector requires site supervisors and site safety health representatives (SSHR) hold the S123 Site Supervisor qualification.
This course has been known by other names and depending on the industry it may be referred to as G1, G8, G9 or QMS.
Yes, you can.
WorkSafe Connect does offer Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) as an option for students. You will be required to provide evidence of currency, competency and to satisfy the units of competency criteria.
This process can often take longer and be more expensive than the 1-day refresher training course, however we are always more than happy to talk through what option might be best for you.

Your S123 (QMS) Site Supervisor qualification must be refreshed every 5 years under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation.
Sites outside of coal mining may factor the refresher into their training scheme / standard and we suggest that you check with the site's training department to ensure that you are aware of their specific refresher requirements.

Coal mines generally request that a supervisor holds the G2 competency (although not mandated) and we offer it as a 1-day course.
